What I'm building to help parents reward their kids

May 2, 2025

Happy Friday, and welcome to May! I’m excited about this one. My oldest child is graduating from HS this year, and so May is her final month in public school. I have lots of emotions about it, most of them positive, and I’m excited that we’re one step closer to summer! Hope you had a good week this week, and that you were as productive as you wanted to be.

I definitely was not. I started the week with caring for my middle child who sprained his ankle on Sunday. He needed to see the doctor, get x-rays, etc. Sometimes it feels like all my kids will have weak ankles. Anyway, it was time-consuming, and limited the work I could get done on Monday. I did start queueing up some more content that is more focused on the messaging that I want to start to push as a part of this business, which was good, as my feed has been light lately.

Making excuses for myself

I still haven’t recorded any new video. I keep making excuses for why I can’t do it on a given day. Not enough time, beard too scraggly, it’s laundry day, etc. Plus I feel like I need minimum of an hour of time to really record something and edit it and get it ready for posting, so I keep putting it off. I will get back on it though! I have ideas for videos all the time. I just need to find myself a more consistent recording schedule so that I am doing it on a regular basis.

In other personal news, my mom had surgery on Wednesday, so I spent basically that whole day sitting in a hospital waiting room, or walking around the hospital itself. I worked when I could, but it’s hard to focus when you’re running on three hours of sleep sitting in a crowded hospital waiting room. And because she needs care to support her at home, my time has been somewhat consumed by that this week as well, though admittedly her recovery is going really well and she hasn’t needed me much at all compared to previous surgeries.

A simple app for parents

The end result, though, is a week spent not doing much but tinkering away on a sticker chart app I started. I spent most of my work time this week making the landing page look as nice as possible, and also implementing the free version of the sticker chart, which is available to all unauthenticated users (and can even be accessed for free right now!)

A screenshot of the landing page I've been working on for the sticker chart app I'm building.

The plan is to allow users to log in if they want to track multiple sticker charts, or be able to customize them with a variety of colors and stickers. It will likely end up being a pretty cheap subscription since I want to keep it light feature-wise, but I have looked at other sticker chart apps out there and they’re not great, and there’s not a lot of them, so I’m hopeful that this one has potential to be a win with the crowd I mentioned last week.

Still planning to quit that job

As for the plan to quit my job, I’m still working on it. Because of how busy I was this week I wanted to focus my time largely on getting some actual development work done, saving the self-inventory and development of the plan for another week when I can focus on it more. So hopefully next week can be a more productive one!

Hope you have an amazing weekend! I will be traveling for band competitions, and also helping out some friends in need with some work around their property. Talk next week!
